Themes
Enjoy a holiday which sticks to a theme. Ideal if you have a particular interest or hobby:
Digital Detox
A welcome return to those pre digital times, where people actually talk and listen to each other; enjoy the art of conversation. Guests and hosts share breakfast, browse through the (paper) newspapers and talk about their plans for the day. Use our Paper maps and routes, read our “local tips” to get even more value from your day out. Everyone comes together for the evening meal. The first class food is accompanied by thoughtful discussion; ideas and suggestions, plans and intentions, stories and experiences. All sprinkled with laughter and wit, all without recourse to: mobiles, iPads, laptops, satnavs, PDAs, etc. Safe storage is provided for such digital devices and a landline is available for emergency contact.
Food
Food is an excellent theme for a holiday at Calon. Take a tour of our field and see what fruit and veg we’re growing. You can meet our four free range chickens as well. Also, not too far from Calon there are some superb restaurants. There are also farmers markets and other exciting food producers; everything from cheese making to a whiskey distillery! Alex is always happy to chat to guests and help put together a local food trail. You're welcome to a bit of "fridge space" if some of the local produce is too hard to refuse.
Wildlife
Red kites and other birds of prey are frequent visitors to Calon and surrounding the area. Seals can be seen lazing on nearby beaches. Even schools of dolphins can be spotted playing in the sea. Boat trips to watch seals and dolphins are available from Cardigan and Newquay. The Wildlife Trust of South and West Wales looks after 25 nature reserves in Carmarthenshire and Ceredigion alone, all less than 40 miles from Calon.
National Trust
Within a 25 mile radius of Calon, you'll find: a gentry estate, two castles and a gold mine. If you're not already a National Trust member, you could join and recoup the cost of a year's membership in one week.
Music
Musicians of all ages, abilities and styles are particularly welcome at Calon. There is a piano (just in case you don't want to bring your own.) With a little bit of notice, Paul will probably be able to arrange playable tunes for the most unlikely array of instruments and voices.
The Fishguard Folk Festival is on in May 2016. The National Botanic Garden of Wales hosts concerts and musical events throughout the year.
Musicians may be granted an audience with our four chickens: Victoria (Peck'em), Tallis, Palestrina and Byrd.
